iEngage: Together and Apart
The Future of Jewish Peoplehood
Together and Apart: The Future of Jewish Peoplehood (created by the Shalom Hartman Institute) will invite participants to engage in a deep values-based conversation that helps them better understand their Jewish identities, their relationship to the Jewish people, and the contemporary challenges facing Israel and World Jewry as one people with multiple homes. The course will help participants open their hearts and minds to better listen and respect those who have differing views about Jewishness, collective identity, and Israel. A nuanced engagement with the challenges facing Jewish peoplehood, Israel, and World Jewry is of paramount importance to the North American Jewish community.
Together and Apart will be taught by Rabbi Weinberg (via Zoom) over the course of 9 consecutive Tuesday evenings 7:00 – 8:30 pm beginning on June 2nd. It will include text study, video lectures by Shalom Hartman Institute scholars, and opportunity for discussion among members of the class. The course is organized around three sections:
1) Classical categories and complexities of Jewish peoplehood;
2) contemporary sources of tension that are challenging Jewish peoplehood, including nationalism, antisemitism and dual loyalty;
3) new conceptual categories and metaphors for understanding Jewish peoplehood in an era of multiple homes.
TBI members are welcome to register for the course whether you can participate in all of the sessions or only in some of them.
