Sefer Ha-Aggadah: Legends for the Talmud and Midrash
First published in 1908 Odessa, in Hebrew, by Hayyim Nahman Bialik and Yehoshua Hana Ravnitzky, this masterful compendium of hundreds of texts from Rabbinic literature, arranged thematically, was translated into English in 1992 by Reform Rabbi William G. Braude. The selected texts reflect the theological and sociological concerns of the ancient rabbis including: God, good and evil, the role of Israel and the nations, the world of nature, healing, the lives of the patriarchs and other biblical personalities, and the lives of the rabbis themselves, Torah, wisdom, and the time-to-come. In five sessions we will explore together selections from this fascinating collection.
Mondays: March 11, 18, 25, April 8, 15. Class meets 6:45-8:15pm preceded by an optional supper 6:00 pm ($10)
