Torah 101 9:00 am: 1ST AND 2ND BOOKS OF SAMUEL
A great Rabbi (Rabbi Weinberg) once wisely remarked,
“One can better understand the evolution of the Davidic
monarchy in the Books of Kings by beginning with the
Books of Samuel.” Consequently, this year’s Torah 101
will explore Samuel 1 and 2 as a prelude to Kings. This
takes us back to a period before there was a unified
Israel, providing a narrative which is one half theology,
one half history and one-half mythology. If this seems
impossible, it’s because the Books of Samuel transcend space and time, thus adding up to much more than the sum of their parts. The story of Samuel’s life as judge, prophet, and leader, and his role in helping to establish a kingship as the people had demanded, provide
a backdrop against which to question the nature of political power and the sources of moral authority.
The exalted language of the Song of Hannah, one of the strongest expressions of faith in the Hebrew canon, sets the stage for a series of reversals of fortune which portray the struggles and difficult choices we all face. Questions like: “To whom does the land belong?” and “how long will it be before you order your people to turn from the pursuit of the kinsman” reminds us that the path to becoming a people is characterized by tragedy, loyalty and contrition.
Join us each Sunday morning when Bet Midrash is in session at 9:00 am. First-timers and long-time participants equally welcome.
